Isla Coronados

Isla Coronados is a volcanic island not far from Loreto.  In fact, it’s close enough that we could get an internet connection!  The island reminds us a lot of Maui with its white beaches and black lava rock.  This turned out to be one of the nicest places we have been so far.  Except for the bees, that is.  The snorkeling, fishing, hiking, whale watching, dolphin watching, everything was just perfect.   However, one drop of fresh water on the deck would attract a swarm of thirsty bees that became very annoying.  We even made a special hatch cover for the pilot house to keep them from getting inside.  We arrived here on April 21st and spent an entire week here before Loreto Fest which started on May 3rd.

We lava this place!

One morning when we thought the temperature was going to be a little cooler, we decided to join our friends on Neos who had shown up the day before, and try to hike to the top of the 900 foot volcano.   The hike was very difficult over sharp lava rock and through cactus.  After a couple of hours, the temperature was into the 90s and we were out of water.  We did make it to the base of the steepest part of the climb before we all agreed not to go any further.  A swim and beer were sounding just too good, and we still had to get down somehow.

The cold beer is very far away right now

What goes up, must come down!

Rich finally found the trick to catching the fish we see under the boat.  They are attracted to the anchor chain when it is stirring up the crabs and clams on the bottom.  Drop a shrimp jig on top of them while they are eating the other stuff, and bam, instant fish.  We are now working on several different recipes for fish dinners.  Up until now he was catching mostly barracuda at anchor, and we really don’t want to eat those.
