Caleta San Juanico

Hiding from the wind behind the point

We left Puerto Escondido on May 7^th and headed for San Juanico.  On the way, we had to pass Isla Coronados, which we could not do without stopping for a couple of days.  We met some friends from Alaska there, John and Nicki on Seychelles.  We got together for a great steak taco dinner on their beautiful boat.  Once underway again, we made the few hour passage under motor due to the usual lack of wind.  When we arrived in San Juanico, a strong south wind was blowing so we anchored for the night in the south part of the bay.  The wind was hot, and the humidity was 17%!  The next morning we moved to the traditional anchorage in the north part of the bay where everyone else was.  We anchored next to Outrider with Anne and Jeff on board.  We shared a dock space next to them in La Paz in November, so it was nice to hear what they’ve been up to.

San Juanico has beautiful rock formations, good fishing and several large beaches.  There is a cruisers shrine on shore where everyone leaves a little memento with their boat name and the year they were here.  We didn’t have anything on board, so Rich found a boat shaped rock and drew a sketch of our boat on it with a sharpie.  Later someone actually came up to our boat and said they really liked our rock!  This is also the area where you can find Apache Tears.  These are small round pieces of obsidian that according to Indian legend, hold mystical power.  Rich hiked up to the top of the hill by the anchorage and scrounged through the cactus until he finally found one.  We’ll see if it works.

We did a lot of fishing here, but only kept a small Bonito for dinner.  Actually, Cathy caught the fish.  In fact, she caught two at once, but one fell off before we could get it in the dinghy.  You have to be careful with hooks in an inflatable boat!  We kept catching Lady Fish, which are fun to catch because they are about two feet long and jump in the air when hooked, but they are terrible to eat.

We really enjoyed our time in this bay, but the weather was expected to turn bad in the next couple of days.  We left at dawn to head to Bahia Conception, but we will be back sometime this season.
