We made back to La Paz from San Evaristo just in time for Carnaval. It's very similar to what goes on in New Orleans, but much more family oriented. It is the first parade that I was encouraged to drink beer at, however. The Malecon is lined with vendors for a few miles, and there are no fewer than 6 large stages with live music. At night, the are all going at the same time and we could hear them at 3 in the morning 7 miles away at the marina.
There was at least 200,000 people lining the streets to watch the parade. There were some very elaborate floats, and then also floats made by the kids. Many of the dance performers were from children's dance groups.
After the parade, we went looking for a place to eat that was not completely mobbed. We found a nice little Italian place called Tony's. He had great pizzas that were reasonably priced and Damiana margaritas. Damiana is a liquor made by the Indians out of some sort of desert plant. It is suppose to have medicinal qualities, as well as being an aphrodisiac. I don't know about that last part, but it sure put us to sleep!
