Loreto Fest is a gathering of cruisers who are travelling
about in the Sea of Cortez. It is
sponsored by the Hidden Port Yacht Club, which is not exactly what you might
think a yacht club would look like. This
year Rich was listed as chairman of the Bocce Tournament even though he
expressly told the organizers that he did not want to do it again this
year. So, he reluctantly put the
tournament together so it could run unattended.
We volunteered to serve spaghetti at the Saturday night dinner for about
80 people, which is always a fun thing to do.
This year, Rich was recruited for an Over The Line team. This is a three person team that tries to hit
a whiffle ball over a line without the other team catching it. It’s a lot of fun, especially when the wind
starts blowing. Most importantly, it’s
hard to get hurt playing it.
Rich also
signed up for the Spam cooking contest.
His creation was Spamaican Jerk Treats with Mango Sauce. He got second place and a nice tote bag. We think the treats were a little too spicy
for the judges as we heard some of them gasping for air, so he may have to come
up with a different recipe next year. He
was beat out by potato salad!
Cathy
volunteered at the silent auction table, where she also won the bid on a nice
small watercolor painting. Cathy
attended a Women In Sailing seminar which drew quite a crowd. No guys allowed, so no one knows what went on
there. The guys milled about the area
trying to pretend they didn’t care what, or who, the women were talking
about. We also attended a good weather
seminar put on by Rick from Tortuga. On
Friday and Sunday there was an afternoon slow music jam on the beach behind the
club. It was great fun to play some
music outside in the shade with a nice breeze.
Cathy brought out her ukulele, and Rich had his guitar. A good time was had by all at this Loreto
Fest with live music, Mexican dancers, good food and games.
