Mazatlan to La Cruz 2013

Before leaving Mazatlan, we signed up for a thanksgiving dinner sponsored by the harbormaster of the El Cid Resort Marina.  The dinner was at a nice outdoor restaurant on the plaza Machado called Pedro y Lolas.  We took the bus into town with our friends Bob and Deanne from Dos Leos.  On the way, we had to stop and walk through the colorful central marketplace.  You can find almost anything you could want in the way of food here.  All the meats, chicken and fish are cut to order.  There are dozens of fruit and vegetable stands all carrying slightly different things in addition to the basics.

The dinner turned out to be very nice.  Only 6 boats signed up for it because it was a little more expensive than the other dinner for cruisers that was being held back at the marina in a sports bar.  However, the food was really good.  Rich had a filet mignon that was fantastic, and Cathy had the surf and turf which was also very good.  There really are not any fresh turkeys in all of Mexico we were told.  The best part was that unlimited drinks and wine were included.  The harbormaster also gave every boat a gift bottle of wine to take home.

Off to La Cruz

The next morning we were up at 5:45 am to catch the outgoing tide and sail the 200 mile trip to La Cruz.

The trip south was fairly bumpy with 4 to 6 foot crossing swells that made us roll every which way.  There was the usual dodging of commercial shrimp boats at night.  We also ran over several unlit long lines that stretched for miles.  These lines have 1/2" floating line with hundreds of large hooks attached.  We were simply just lucky nothing got tangled in the prop.  We can usually see them in the daylight, but the only way we knew they were there in the dark is after we hit the bouys with the boat! We were welcomed into Bandaras Bay 26 hours later on Saturday morning by two giant humpback whales that surfaced right on our bow and scared the heck out of us.  It was nice to be back in calmer waters again.

Once settled into La Cruz life, we attended a spay, neuter fundraiser at a local restaurant with 200 people.  There was some great live music, door prizes, etc..  Cathy was lucky to sit in a chair that had a door prize stuck to it.  She won a pizza dinner with drinks at a pizza and sports bar in the nearby town of Bucerias.  We went there on Thursday night with our friends Rick and Marilynn from Tortuga.  The pizza wasn't great, but it was a great for a free pizza!

We continue to enjoy all the live music here in town, and we are having a great time meeting all our friends from last year as they arrive from the cold north.
